we believe the best flavour starts at the source. We partner directly with local Kenyan farmers who use sustainable and traditional methods.
The key to a truly great spice is its potency. We meticulously hand-sort and small-batch grind our spices only after you order

TUMA SPICES prioritizes freshness and local support. Imported spices often spend months in transit, losing potency. Our direct farm-to-table sourcing ensures maximum volatile oil retention, meaning you get a significantly more vibrant aroma and intense flavour. Plus, you support Kenyan farmers directly!
The best test is the sniff and sight check. Quality ground spices should have a vibrant, deep color (not faded) and a strong, immediate aroma when you rub a small amount between your fingers. If the scent is weak or smells like dust, it’s old. TUMA SPICES uses small-batch grinding to guarantee maximum potency.
The main enemies of spice are heat, light, air, and moisture. Store your TUMA SPICES in an airtight container (our packaging is designed for this!) in a cool, dark place like a kitchen cabinet, away from the stove or direct sunlight. Whole spices generally last 3-4 years, while ground spices maintain peak flavour for 6-12 months.
| Use whole spices for long-cooking dishes like Pilau, stews, broths, and curries (they release flavour slowly). Use ground spices for quick dishes, rubs (like for Nyama Choma), baking, and dishes where a smooth texture is needed. For the best aroma, we recommend buying whole and grinding fresh right before use! |
